Stedfast United A.F.C.
History of the club

Stedfast United A.F.C. was formed in September 1972 to provide football for past members of the 1st and 21st Companies of the Boys' Brigade. The name comes from the Boys' Brigade motto 'Sure and Stedfast'.

The club was initially based in Rathmines and played home fixtures in the Phoenix Park. However since 1983 we have been based in Marley Park in South Dublin. Our first game was against DCM on Saturday 9th September 1972 and resulted in a 3-2 defeat. However fortunes improved and we ended that first season as winners of Division 2B and were also runners-up in the Hely Cup.

For the first 10-15 years 'Stedfast' tended to be a good 'social' club. Despite causing many an upset and reaching numerous finals, very few trophies were won. It's only within the last decade that our club has tasted real success.

The club is based in Ballinteer but with players coming from Ballinteer, Dundrum, Rathfarnham, Nutgrove and Knocklyon.

We have now won the Premier title on three occasions, in 1991, 1997 and 1998. Indeed 1997, our 25th anniversary year was by far our most memorable. Along with the Premier title, the Irish Progressive Cup, Richard Knight Cup and Barton Shield were also won. Over the period 1991-1998 our 2nd 3rd and 4th teams have also won league divisions and shields.

The achievements of these years are due mainly to the coaching expertise of the managers concerned along with the provision of good training facilities and of course the commitment of all our players. In the early 90's we had Neville Steedman, a well known ex League of Ireland (Shamrock Rovers) player as player/manager. Jim Tarpey had the reins from 1995-1998, Billy Long 1998-2000, Pat Dunne (ex Man United Goalkeeper)01/02, Henry Fox 02/03 ,Darren Kavanagh 2003/04 and we are hoping for continued success with our current manager Robbie Donnelly.

Over the years very many Stedfast players have represented the U.C.L. in Inter-league and challenge games. Names such as Brian Reggie (our first league rep.), Clive Macken, Brian Beardsley, Jim Reilly, Gerry Browne and Declan O'Connor come to mine. More recently Brian Farrelly (captain) Gary Whyte, Darren Kavanagh, Kevin Norris, Robert Doyle, Niall Little and Paul Geraghty have all been part of Albert Sugg's plans. In addition Neville Steedman, Brian Farrelly and Gary Whyte also represented the U.C.L. on the L.F.A. Panel.

The club has also provided members for the U.C.L. Executive Committee. Noel Fitzroy has served on the Executive Committee for quite a few years holding the position of committee member, minutes secretary and currently Hon. Fixtures Secretary. Brian Flewett has been Hon. Treasurer of the U .C.L. for the past five years. We in Stedfast United are proud of our association with the United Churches' League and feel our club in tandem with the league has made tremendous progress since 1972.
