Two more cups up for grabs

May 22nd 2001. Ger Keville - The Star.

After Dublin University's remarkable cup triumph last week, there are two more cups up for grabs this week. Tonight Stedfast 4ths take on SSP in the final of the Sidney Bedlow Cup at Dalymount Park. And tomorrow night it's Bawnville and Clontarf in action in the final of the Richard Knight Cup, also at Dalymount. Stedfast for all their honours in the United Churches League, go into this clash looking for their first Sidney Bedlow win. And manager Mark Whyte is gunning for glory after a somewhat mediocre season in the league. "Obviously this is the one cup that we really want to win because it is the only thing that Stedfast have yet to win in the UCL," he said.

Campaign

But Stedfast who compete in Division Three face a team who boast a fine league record this campaign. SSP are guaranteed promotion from division 3A next season - they have won 17 out of their 18 league games with just one draw. They go into tonight's final undefeated all season and confidence is sky high. "We are looking forward to this because it will be a challenge for us," said captain Barry Kiernan. "We have been playing very well in the league but realistically we should be in a higher division." After tonight's cup final clash, SSP can focus again on the league next weekend when a win over rivals Bow Lane will secure the title they desire so much.
