United best in decider
May 22nd 2001. The Star.
The Sidney Bedlow Cup Final proved a fascinating clash between Stedfast United
from Division 3 and SSP from 3A. Stedfast took the lead on 22 minutes when Michael
Morrissey reacted best of all from a free kick to head home from 9 yards. Derek
Burke, Eamon Keally and Eoin Tuck were all lively up front for SSP but just couldn't
find the target.
Stedfast went 2-0 ahead on 35 minutes when persistant chasing from
Dermot Leahy allowed to capitalise on a defensive mistake and tap into an empty net.
Three minutes later keeper Barry Shields redeemed himself somewhat when he brilliantly
got to Gerry Browne's delicate chip to prevent 3-0.
In the second half, Burke and
David Murphy both had good chances for SSP in the first 20 minutes. Burke must still
be wondering how his cross, on 75 minutes, which sailed over keeper Alan Sullivan's
head somehow stayed out. With nine minutes left, SSP's reserve keeper tumbled a
Stedfast attacker in the box. Browne stepped up to slot home and seal the victory.
