Stedfast just Dino-mite!
January 24th 2000. Evening Herald by Jimmy Geoghegan.
Clontarf Athletic 2 - Stedfast United 8
Real Madrid fan Dino Mayans showed some of the style and panache normally associated with the
Spanish giants when he grabbed a hat-trick in Stedfast's demolition of Clontarf Athletic in
this Division 3 clash.
Both Dino's parents come from Zaragoza but it is the Real team from Madrid that he has
supported since he was a boy and he showed at Baskin Lane on Saturday that he can play a
bit as well.
On the right wing for most of the game, Dino was a constant threat to the home defence with
his jinking runs and penchant for long range shots.
GRIP
The winger's first contribution to this goal-fest arrived after 18 minutes, the second, a curling
effort from 18 yards just before half-time and the third early in the second-half as the visitors
took a firm grip on proceedings. United's young manager and prolific striker Brian Lamon helped
himself to two goals, with the pacy John Rossiter getting one and to compound a miserable
afternoon for Clontarf substitute Mark Curry came on late in the game and also got two for the
visitors. "We made a slow start to the season but we appear to have got our act together in recent
months and this was a great result for us" said Lamon whose side led 4-1 at the break. Ironically
it was Clontarf who paid dearly for repeated defensive mistakes - who scored first and last in this
uneven contest.
FLOWING
The opener came after just 8 minutes with a free-flowing move involving Frank Roche, John Kershaw
and the impressive Gary Doyle which ended with the latter chipping the keeper. The hard working
Roche, back after a lengthy lay-off, was felled in the box in the 87th minute and Brian Kenny
despatched the penalty with conviction to make the scoreline look a bit better for the home side -
but just a little.
